Today's Meditation
Read Psalm 29
1Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.
3The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.
4The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
10The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!
In the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) the first word is translated as "ascribe". In the King James Version it is translated as "give". I think I like the word "ascribe" better. It holds a deeper and more complex meaning than the simple word "give".
Ascribe means to "attribute, assign, impute, or credit something to the account of a person or thing. The word ascribe suggests an inferring or conjecturing of cause, quality, authorship." Thus, in this psalm, the author says for us to assign credit to God for all of the following attributes; glory and strength and the singular power of God's voice, alone.
If you remember the beginning of creation and the open of the first chapter of Genesis - God spoke and the Universe was created. God spoke and order was made out of chaos; light was separated from darkness. God spoke and the waters and the sky were gathered together. God spoke and the earth was formed, plants and trees grew. God spoke and the sun and moon and all the starry host were placed in their positions. God spoke and the skies filled with birds and the seas brought forth their creatures. God spoke and all the living things that walked about the earth began life, including us. God spoke and it was good.
This is the power that the author of Psalm 29 is speaking about - the glory and strength of God's voice. And God says to us, "You are mine". With the same voice that brought forth the world, that created the wonders of the universe, God speaks your name! You are a wonder to behold and full of God's unlimited power for good and for peace.
Blessings to you this day.
