Today's Meditation, Prayer, and Activity - Friday, December 18, 2020

Friday, December 18

And he said to them, “Take care!  Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”  Then he told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly.  And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’  But God said to him, ‘You fool!  This very night your life is being demanded of you.  And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’  So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.  Luke 12:15-21

Jesus warns us to be on guard and keep watch for all kinds of greediness.  Jesus tells us to keep a lookout for our own propensity to believe that our life’s worth is measured in material goods.  When have you believed life consists of an abundance of possessions?  Be conscious today of your relationship to money and possessions.  How does that relationship reflect, or not, your relationship to Jesus Christ?  Write down your reflections.

Prayer

Jesus, You enter the world as an infant, born in a stable to a family with little in the way of material possessions.  You tell Your followers to take nothing for their journey.  You warn us to be on guard for greed.  As we prepare for Your birth, we pray to be given the faith to put You first so that all our priorities are rightly ordered.  Amen.

Activity:

Call a friend or family member that you haven’t spoken to in a while.  Catch up on what has been happening with them.  Tell them how you are doing, as well.  Ask what you can be praying about for them.
