1Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
3They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
4The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
“…their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law
they meditate day and night. They are
like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither. In all
they do, they prosper.”
My Grandmother and I would often drive around to find
rocks for her garden walls. On one journey, I remember us passing along a stretch of fields that brought us to a bridge that
crossed a small stream. By the
stream, for as far as you could see, were a stand of trees and bushes on both
banks of the river. After crossing the
stream, we found ourselves in another stretch of meadow. We parked along the road and walked back to
the trees and stream. The stream twisted
gently left and right as it meandered along the rolling hills of Chester
County. It had been a particularly hot
summer and much of the meadow grasses were scorched by the heat and sun. But in the shade of the trees along the banks
of the refreshing river waters, the plants were as vibrant and green as
ever. I don’t remember if we found any
suitable rocks that day, but I do remember the distinct difference in the
feeling of coolness at the river under the shade of the trees.
This is how
the psalmist envisions the people of God who meditate on God’s word day and
night. They soak up the refreshing water
of God’s word, reviving the heart and soul.
Those who follow the way of the Lord prosper in all they do because they
have been fed and watered. Their lives
are rich and full.
Is the word
of God filling your soul and reviving you from being a withered shell to a
thriving follower?
